4th edition Cines del Sur festival

The fourth edition of the Granada Festival, Cines del Sur, once again lights up its projectors to flood the city with the lights and colors of films from Asia, Africa, and Latin America, with a special focus on films never before seen in Spain, arriving from outside the major production centers. The Regional Government of Andalusia maintains its commitment to a project that knows no borders when it comes to art and transforms Granada into a space of freedom, diversity, and coexistence, where stories from 'other worlds' engage with the common concerns of all humanity.

In 2010, the festival's usual sections are enhanced by a carefully curated competitive Official Section, which presents ten feature films premiering in Spain, and Itinerarios, which brings together many of the best films from the South's recent output. Added to these is Mediterréneos, dedicated to high-quality works from the countries bordering the Mare Nostrum, and Pantalla Abierta, which brings open-air screenings to different corners of Granada to bring cinema closer to the largest possible number of spectators.

The grand retrospective of this fourth edition is dedicated to forty years of Filipino cinema (1970–2010), an unprecedented selection in Spain that brings together some twenty seminal titles, from classics by Lino Brocka, Eddie Romero, or Ishmael Bernal to the contemporary perspectives of Lav Diaz, Brillante Mendoza, or Adolfo Alix Jr. The program is rounded out by sections such as Memoria del Sur, TransCine, Más Factor Humano, and Extraño Tanto Mar, along with a tribute to Jafar Panahi, all of which underscore the festival's commitment to cinema that questions history, identity, and fundamental rights.

The event also features meetings of the Southern Film Festivals platform, panel discussions, seminars like 'Cinemas of the North, Cinemas of the South,' and exhibitions such as Enfoques or Desbordamiento de Val del Omar, as well as festival extensions to other municipalities in the province. Even in a year marked by economic crisis, Cines del Sur grows in ambition and scope, solidifying Granada's position as an essential destination for those who seek in cinema a tool for knowledge, cooperation, and shared hope between North and South.
