Amal Ramsis is one of the most prominent filmmakers in contemporary Arab documentary cinema. Born in Egypt, she began her academic career in law and worked as a lawyer before shifting her professional life towards cinema, a discipline that allowed her to more freely explore issues related to memory, identity, social justice, and women's rights. Her interest in audiovisual creation led her to move to Spain, where she completed film directing studies and began to develop a body of work characterized by strong political and human sensitivity. From her early works, she showed a particular concern for unearthing silenced stories and offering a critical perspective on the historical processes that have shaped contemporary Arab societies. Throughout her career, she has directed numerous documentaries that have been screened at international festivals and cultural centers in Europe, Africa, Latin America, and the Middle East. Among her most acclaimed works is You Come from Far Away, a personal and historical investigation into the participation of Arab volunteers in the Spanish Civil War. Through testimonies, archives, and family memories, the film unearths a little-known episode of the international anti-fascist struggle. In addition to her work as a director and screenwriter, Ramsis has been actively involved as a producer, educator, and cultural promoter. She is the founder of Entre Cineastas, an initiative that promotes exchange among female filmmakers from different regions and strengthens collaboration networks among women in cinema.
