9th edition Cines del Sur festival

From June 8 to 14, 2015

The ninth edition of the Granada Film Festival, Cines del Sur, takes place from June 8 to 14, 2015, confirming Granada as a city dedicated to the cinemas of Asia, Africa, and Latin America, with a program that blends recent premieres and established titles from the Global South. The core remains the Official Section, featuring ten feature films screened at the Isabel la Católica Theater, joined once again by Pantalla Abierta (Open Screen) in Plaza de las Pasiegas, transformed into a large open-air cinema.

Pantalla Abierta screens works that combine popular and auteur cinema, such as the Argentine musical documentary “Salgán Salgán. A Father and Son Tango,” the Palestinian “Omar,” the Japanese “Ecotherapy Getaway Holiday,” the Bollywood “Ram-Leela,” and the Cambodian “The Last Reel,” bringing diverse cinematographies and genres to the Granada audience. The festival also maintains venues such as the Corral del Carbón, the Palacio de los Condes de Gabia, and the Palacio de Congresos, expanding capacity and visibility.

Institutional collaborations are strengthened by the documentary section selected by Al Jazeera International Documentary Film Festival and by “So Far, So Close,” in dialogue with the University of Granada, dedicated to films from the Global South distributed in Spain but never before screened in the city. cinesdelsur.ext, which brings screenings to other venues in the province, continues, as does the thematic series “Cinema and Health in the Imaginations of the South,” which addresses illness, body, and vulnerability in peripheral contexts.

A distinctive feature of this edition is the tribute to Moroccan filmmaker Farida Benlyazid, with a series that explores her filmography and highlights her role in the renewal of Maghrebi cinema and in the representation of the female universe. Overall, the ninth installment consolidates the festival as a platform for “other cinemas” outside dominant circuits and paves the way for a tenth edition poised to strengthen its national and international standing.
