From June 11 to 16, 2012

The sixth edition of the Granada Film Festival, Cines del Sur, arrives in 2012 "fighting against the elements," adapted to the crisis but faithful to its objectives: to offer in Granada a selection of wonderful films from Asia, Africa, and Latin America that have not been released in Spanish commercial cinemas. The festival asserts itself as a unique ethical and aesthetic proposal on the country's festival map, where cinematographies from the South showcase both very harsh personal and social realities and the possibility of a more just future.
The program is structured around the Official Section and Itineraries, which bring together fiction and documentary feature films produced or co-produced in the geopolitical South. In addition to these, there are the opening and closing sessions, the musical block Next Music Station, various special sessions, and cinesdelsur.ext, which brings titles to other venues and municipalities in the province, reinforcing the aim of decentralizing access to cinema.
Among the defining features of this edition, 'Extraño Tanto Mar' stands out. This section, developed in collaboration with Granada Acoge and the Provincial Council, is entirely dedicated to the migrant woman. Its films explore, from a female perspective, internal and external journeys, displacement, discovery, and the growing autonomy of women in migratory processes, prompting the audience to critically reflect on the common perception of immigration.
Another key element is 'Perlas del Sur' (Pearls of the South), which brings back emblematic titles that won awards in previous Cines del Sur editions and are virtually unseen in commercial distribution. With the ongoing support of the Junta de Andalucía and other institutions, the festival is consolidating its role as a platform for solidarity culture and high artistic quality, an 'ode in images' to that South which, as Benedetti reminds us in the catalog, also exists and demands to be seen and heard.
